Numerous multivitamins on the market now contain minerals that are undesirable in a multivitamin – notably, zinc, calcium, magnesium, and phosphorus. These minerals have the potential to block the absorption of key nutrients, such as amino acids, as well as other critical minerals.

Zinc may limit amino acid intake, hence decreasing muscle size and strength development. Zinc may also have an effect on the absorption of copper and zinc. Calcium, which is contained in the great majority of multivitamins, may inhibit the absorption of iron and manganese. Magnesium, which is also found in many multivitamins, may impair manganese and calcium absorption. With regard to phosphorus, you don’t want too much of it, and the usual American diet already contains a significant amount of this mineral. Excess phosphorus in the body can reduce vitamin D’s effectiveness, affecting bone health and possibly testosterone levels.
